is especially popular during the winter season because it

arrive in local markets, fresh shaljam becomes a common 

sight, and many households include it regularly in their meals.

 Shalgam Bharta Recipe 

Turnip Bharta is a traditional Pakistani winter dish 

that is simple, comforting, and full of flavor.

 It is made with boiled and mashed turnips cooked 

with onions, tomatoes, and basic desi spices. 

This dish is light on the stomach and tastes best with 

fresh roti.

Ingredients:

  • Turnip – 500 grams (peeled and cut into pieces)

  • Onion – 2 medium (finely chopped)

  • Tomatoes – 2 medium (finely chopped or crushed)

  • Green chilies – 2 (finely chopped)

  • Garlic – 4–5 cloves (chopped or pasted)

  • Red chili powder – 1 teaspoon

  • Turmeric powder – ½ teaspoon

  • Salt – to taste


  • Cooking oil  3–4 tablespoons

  • Fresh coriander – for garnish

Method:


Heat oil in a pan. Add the chopped onion and 

sauté until light golden. Add garlic and green chilies, 

and cook until fragrant. Add tomatoes and cook until 

soft and the oil begins to separate.

Now add red chili powder, turmeric, salt.

Mix well and cook the spices for a minute. 

Add the turnip and mix thoroughly. 

Then add enough water so that the turnips are completely 

covered. Cook on medium flame for 20 to 30 minutes,



or mash the turnip until the bharta becomes slightly dry

and aromatic.
